the accused

This morning someone was ringing our doorbell frantically...as if they were pushing it over and over and over. I looked out the peep hole to see a police officer standing there and I could also see his car parked in the street. I thought to myself, "oh my gosh, our house is on FIRE!" (last year a house in our neighborhood was burning before our eyes due to a faulty electrical box in their garage, and our power has been acting up, so I'm of course paranoid ours needs checked too). I answered the door and he said they had a 911 line in use at this address. I looked behind me at the floor and saw our phone lying on the ground. I was so embarrassed. Just 5 minutes before that I remember Graham playing with it. So I ran over and turned if off. Then I apologized over and over and over. He was so nice and said he was just glad everything was ok, and something to the effect of, "at least he's learning some good numbers to dial." He also said they had gotten a call with no one on the other end, but they could hear a child crying (I don't remember him crying, but I was doing laundry).

Add me to the list of idiots who let their babies play with the phone thinking that they would never be able to turn the phone on, push the 9, push the 1, and push the 1 again. What are the odds?

Also add me to the list of people who think law enforcement is great. I have had several run-ins with the police (a warning for speeding, and then two..yes TWO car lockouts), and they have been extremely nice and helpful. One was even off-duty. So anyway, don't let your kids play with the phone, and give a policeman a hug.

I always strive to catch a child's spirit, and I have the most difficult time with my own children. But this one of Evie is so her.

I'm It

I've been tagged by Jen, so I'm supposed to list 7 quirky things about myself. This should be easy. I'm pretty quirky.

1. I go to the same Wal-Mart cashier each time we go to Wal-Mart. Her name is Anna. I will wait in her line before I go to another cashier's line. She loves my kids and they love her; plus she's quick. Oh, and she's Filipino and has a cool accent.

2. I am the least picky eater you will find. I like just about everything. On the short list of things I don't like: raisins in cookies, cantaloupe (called muskmelon in some parts of Indiana), and water chestnuts.

3. When I sing really high my eyes water like mad. This is especially funny when I sing songs to Evie at bedtime. My voice is really bad too. :)

4. I like to shake what my momma gave me. I can't sit still at a wedding reception--I must get up and dance.

5. I have wide feet.

6. I once fell asleep on a dog.

7. When I'm nervous, my palms sweat, my hands and voice shakes, and my face gets bright red. This has happened quite a few times when talking to someone in a position of power.

Now I'm supposed to tag some more people to do the same on their blogs. So here you go; list your quirks!

4-H Fair on Steroids

Late afternoon today we decided to see what all the hype was about at the covered bridge festival. I must say that I was pretty excited. I have always loved bridges as my girlfriends from high school will tell you; I took them on many a field trip to see bridges and barely got us back in time for curfew. But little did I know, the covered bridge festival is not about the covered bridges. It's apparently all about the deep fried candy bars, the yard sales by the side of the road all the way to Rockville, and the gazillions of people all trying to walk down the same narrow road while being chased by people on golf carts who just don't understand there is no room for them there. It didn't take long after paying $5 to the man who let us and 300 other people park in his yard for me to realize it's not exactly what I had in mind when I said I wanted to go. I talked Greg into getting back into the car and driving me to a covered bridge. But could we even find a map in all the madness? No. But luckily we found some bridges by following the signs. The sun set shortly after we found what we were looking for (or what I was looking for), and the mosquitos were eating us alive. I got a few pictures that I liked while we were enjoying being away from all the people, but not as many as I wanted to get. I don't know why I can't catch Graham in focus while he's smiling. He's such a smiley little guy, but here you'd think he was serious all the time. Maybe next time. He's still a stud.
